Sunderland’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park delivered a high-intensity contest, and here are the player ratings from the visit to Newcastle United.
According to Sunderland Echo, the rivals were separated by only a handful of Premier League points, and the occasion carried its usual edge, noise and pressure.
Newcastle opened the scoring and there was little Omar Alderete could do about it. After the break, Trai Hume, stationed on the left, hooked the ball back for Sunderland’s equaliser.
Alderete was Sunderland’s standout, nine, assured in defence and crisp with his passing, repeatedly breaking lines into midfield.
Melker Ellborg, six, looked shaky early on and dawdled over a goal kick that Anthony Gordon chased down, but his distribution improved after half-time.
Hume, seven, showed composure and also stepped into midfield when required. Lutsharel Geertruida, seven, struggled before the interval, then grew into the game and carried a threat from right-back.
