It was a case of better late than never for the Hoops against Aberdeen at Celtic Park this afternoon, with Kieran Tierney putting Celtic 2-1 ahead with a few minutes to go before James Forrest made it 3-1 in stoppage time though, in truth, it was a result that the Hoops thoroughly deserved.
It was a significant goal from Forrest, not least of all because it made the three points secure, but because it meant that the club’s most decorated player extended his scoring run to an incredible 17 consecutive seasons.
Whilst that number on its own is mightily impressive in its own right, the context of that achievement has to be considered to fully appreciate the importance of Forrest's goal today.
It means that the 34-year-old, who has picked up 26 major honours in the Hoops, has now scored in more consecutive seasons than Paul McStay and the club’s greatest goalscorer, Jimmy McGrory.
It also means that, after surpassing Bobby Lennox’s trophy haul earlier this year, he has now equalled the Lisbon Lion’s record of goals in 17 consecutive seasons, with only the early 1900s legend, Jimmy McMenemy ahead of him on 18 seasons.
Speaking to Celtic TV alongside Kieran Tierney after the match, James Forrest reflected on today’s achievement.
He said: “To play at this club for such a long time has been unbelievable and I’ve enjoyed every minute.
“It’s great to help the lads and keep going, and I think that all the boys showed character today. Hopefully we can kick on from here.”
