James Justin says Leeds United signed him for his versatility, and since a £10m move Daniel Farke has trusted him across the back line.
“I feel like, by this time, I've played in basically every position across the back line and midfield.” He was speaking to the Official Leeds United podcast.
Leeds signed the 28-year-old from relegated Leicester City last summer, prompting questions with Jayden Bogle already first-choice at right-back. Justin’s first start came at Manchester City in November, covering Gabriel Gudmundsson at left-back. Farke switched to a back three at half-time, and Justin has since made 17 further starts in multiple roles and systems.
“I think he [Farke] obviously knows that I can play in a lot of positions and do whatever. I feel like that’s one of the reasons they recruited me this season. I can play both sides at centre-back or wing-back.”
Justin has earned starts even when others are fit, with Bogle or Jaka Bijol at times dropping to the bench. On Sunday at West Ham, Gudmundsson was not risked due to a minor injury, with Justin providing cover. Farke has labelled him outstanding after a clean sheet at Liverpool, adding he was not surprised.
“It’s nice that he puts his trust in me to play all these different positions and obviously do a good job in any of them.”
