James Morrison has opened up on Harry Whitwell's future with West Brom with his contract set to expire in 2027

James Morrison has claimed that he wants to tie Harry Whitwell down to a new contract amid transfer links to Norwich City.

It was reported earlier this summer that the youngster has attracted the interest of the Canaries after his loan spell with Forest Green Rovers last season.

The 20-year-old had been unable to break into the first team plans at the Hawthorns, which led to him going to the non-league side.

However, since his return to Albion he has cemented himself in Morrison’s first team, featuring in both of their opening league games this season.

The forward even scored his first league goal for the club in their 3-1 win over Burnley last Sunday.

His strike levelled the game at 1-1, with the Baggies going on to take home all three points against the Clarets.

Morrison has claimed that he is keen to see Whitwell remain at the club, and wants him to sign a new contract as his current terms will expire next summer.

The 40-year-old has put pressure on the Championship side to make sure they can strike an agreement with the player in order to avoid losing him.

“We’re all keen, as a club, to get it nailed down,” said Morrison, via Express & Star.

“And I’m sure the club are working hard behind the scenes to get that done.”

Morrison has praised Whitwell, admitting that he’s fully earned this chance in the first team squad, and that he will continue to earn these opportunities if he can maintain his strong work ethic.

“[His opportunity] is fully deserved through his hard work,” added the West Brom boss.

“The time he spent when he came back from his loan last season did him more good than it was felt.

“He could see what work he had to do in the summer.

“He probably saw a chance for himself.

“His attributes help him in the shape that we’re playing, and he’s got the confidence at the minute.

“He’s another one that has to keep working, keep his feet on the ground, and I’ll give him the platform to showcase it.”

Whitwell has come through the West Brom academy system, with the youngster earning his debut as far back as August 2024 in an EFL Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town.

The forward made his first league appearance in May 2025, coming off the bench in a 5-3 win against Luton Town.

But he played just two more times for Albion last season before going out on loan to Forest Green Rovers, where he made 23 league appearances and contributed two goals.

West Brom fans have urged the club to tie Whitwell down to a new contract, particularly off the back of his performance against Burnley.

Questions have been asked regarding why a new deal hasn’t been signed, raising concerns over his future.

However, some fans are still sceptical over his true quality, and whether he is really ready to compete at a Championship level.

Norwich will have until 1 September to complete any summer deal for Whitwell, with the market set to close on Tuesday.

The Baggies should be keen to tie him down to a new deal and end all this speculation over his future.

Academy players like Whitwell are to be treasured, particularly as he is likely to remain a fan favourite even if his performances take a dip at some point this season.

Letting him go either through the expiration of his contract or from agreeing a deal with Norwich would be a poor piece of business, and Albion must avoid it coming to that.
