James Morrison expects it is a matter of time before VAR is introduced in the Championship, and he would not oppose it. The Albion boss prefers it to be used only for major calls.
Debate flared after Albion’s 2-1 win at Norwich, when Aune Heggebo opened the scoring with his hand. “I do think it’s time to bring it into the Championship... I can’t believe it hasn’t come in yet,” said Martin Keown on Talksport this week.
Heggebo received a two-match suspension on Thursday after an FA charge of successful deception of officials to score, and Albion’s appeal was rejected. Norwich head coach Philippe Clement was unhappy, while Morrison said decisions even out and otherwise he did not care.
Championship clubs rejected a form of VAR at a vote in April. Refereeing chiefs had proposed football video support, giving each head coach two reviews per game and using fewer resources.
Morrison said he would welcome help on the key decisions but is otherwise on the fence. He warned the volume of incidents in the Championship could make matches too stop start.
VAR already operates in the second tiers in Spain, Italy and Germany, and plans for France’s Ligue 2 were shelved after a broadcast deal collapsed. Morrison added he is not too fussed if it is not adopted now, but he thinks it will come and a majority may start backing it.
