James Morrison says Albion are working to secure Harry Whitwell’s future, with the 20-year-old out of contract at the end of the season.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Morrison stressed the club are keen to finalise a new deal and that work is ongoing behind the scenes. Whitwell has been one of the standouts in pre-season and the opening weeks.

The forward spent the first half of last season on loan at Forest Green Rovers in the National League, then returned to identify the work needed over the summer. That period is seen as having helped set his summer targets.

He scored his first Albion goal against Rotherham in the EFL Cup, then netted his first Championship goal against Burnley on Sunday.

Morrison believes Whitwell’s chance is deserved through hard work. He feels the youngster’s attributes suit the current shape, and that confidence is flowing, while urging him to keep his feet on the ground.

He said he will provide the platform to showcase it, and that a strong culture and their connection have given the youngster belief. An academy product, he is regarded as level-headed and his rise has pleased supporters.

Whitwell is pushing for a start at Newcastle in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night. Fellow attacker Mikey Johnston will miss that tie and Saturday’s trip to Middlesbrough as Albion assess an ankle problem.
