James Morrison holds fire on West Brom future until safety sealed

James Morrison says any talks over his West Brom post will wait until Championship safety is secured.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 39-year-old has revived a campaign that looked bound for League One two months ago, and this stint has given him the bug for the job. It would be a tough call for chairman Shilen Patel’s Bilkul Football WBA to overlook him if he steers Albion to survival, though the owners may want more time before a permanent move.

Morrison said: “I’m enjoying it but I’ve said all along I just want to get to the end target. Then we can talk about it. There is going to be a time for me to answer that, so I will do so in a couple of weeks.”

Morrison has managed with an EFL financial breach charge hanging over Albion for more than a week, with possible points deductions and a hearing imminent. He blanked out the noise and oversaw a vital 2-0 win at Preston on Saturday.

This is his third and longest caretaker spell at The Hawthorns. The first two totalled three games, and Albion were unbeaten.

They lost tamely at Oxford in late February in the first match of this stint, prompting a public rebuke, and the response has been striking. The success at Deepdale made it eight unbeaten before Watford on Tuesday night.

Albion are targeting a final-day return for captain Jed Wallace, who has stayed influential behind the scenes. The 32-year-old injured a calf in training late last month and has missed the run-in.

The hope is to have him in contention against relegated Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday week, May 2. With Karlan Grant and Mikey Johnston also out, Morrison has reworked his wide areas, and Wallace is out of contract this summer.
