The Black Country Derby continues to tick closer, with West Brom travelling to Molineux to take on bitter rivals Wolves at Sunday lunchtime.

It’s some way to close out the Championship action heading into the elongated international break, with bragging rights up for grabs in front of what promises to be a raucous Molineux crowd.

It’s also a first league meeting between the two bitter rivals since 2021, with the pair aiming to keep their impressive starts to the season going.

Wolves, recently coming down from the Premier League, are hovering around the promotion picture, with a 1-0 victory away at Sheffield United last week meaning they’ve won three out of their last five league games and have 11 points on the board.

Meanwhile, the Baggies have carried on their excellent turnaround under James Morrison, with Albion taking 14 points from their opening seven matches and also staking a claim for a promotion push, making this an enthralling encounter to watch.

As such a big fixture draws nearer, Baggies fans will be wondering what Morrison’s thought process will be when picking his XI.

And there will be questions about what forward line he elects to field given West Brom couldn’t get over the line to secure victory against Queens Park Rangers last week – a game where Jimmy-Jay Morgan was left on the bench and Barney Stewart was substituted on for an ineffective Aune Heggebo.

What makes the Black Country derby such an interesting watch in the early stages of the season is that both sides come into the clash off the back of successful starts to the new campaign, and for West Brom, James Morrison is continuing to work his magic after being given the role of leading the team on a full-time basis.

Albion claimed a very impressive 2-1 win on the road at Norwich City to kickstart their term and then followed it up with a 3-1 victory at The Hawthorns over recently relegated Burnley to win their opening two matches.

Their only defeat of the campaign so far was away at promotion-contenders Middlesbrough, but they arrested the slide by drawing at home against Charlton Athletic and then securing back-to-back victories over Watford and Derby County.

The Baggies come into the Black Country derby following a 1-1 draw against fellow high-flyers Queens Park Rangers, meaning Albion have taken 14 points from their opening seven league games and will hold much confidence that they can claim all three points at Molineux.

James Morrison told to play front two of Aune Heggebo and Jimmy-Jay Morgan v Wolves

Speaking to Football League World, West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess believes James Morrison should start both Aune Heggebo and Jimmy-Jay Morgan up front on Sunday, believing that front two gives Albion the best chance of picking up a positive result on derby day.

When asked about whether Heggebo should be dropped, Callum told FLW: “No. I’m sure Albion should be starting Aune Heggebo on Sunday.

“Albion’s best football this season has come when it’s been him and Jimmy-Jay Morgan working as a strike pairing up front.

“Sometimes, without each other in the team, they look a bit isolated, whereas they have got each other to play off when they start. For example, Morgan enjoys having Heggebo occupy the central areas, which helps him drift outwards to the left.

“When Heggebo isn’t in the team and Morgan occupies the left, it does look a bit empty and vacant in the middle of the pitch, so I think for Albion’s best chance of getting a result on Sunday, they’ve got to play both of them up top together.”

After being rested against QPR last weekend, Jimmy-Jay Morgan is a shoo-in to come back into the starting XI, while Aune Heggebo, a £4.7m arrival from SK Brann last summer, will be expected to lead the line once again.

Albion’s only other forward option in Barney Stewart is still quite raw after arriving from Scottish outfit Falkirk this summer, and it would be such a baptism of fire to hand him his first start in a Black Country Derby.

So with that unlikely to happen, it should be Heggebo and Morgan as a pair, who have worked well so far together in the early stages of the season.

While Heggebo will never be the goalscoring machine fans crave, his work to stretch defences and use his physicality to bring others into play has benefitted Morgan in particular, who has been able to make use of the open spaces off the left to rack up the goals and assists in the opening few games.

With Heggebo’s hard work paired with Morgan’s quality when given the opportunities, it’s such an effective strike force, and one that could have a lot of joy given Wolves have already conceded 10 times so far this term.

In a clash expected to have plenty of goals and talking points, Morgan and Heggebo will be hopeful of being at the heart of it, with their work in the final third fundamental to the Baggies
