James Rodríguez announces Colombia retirement | OneFootball

James Rodríguez, Colombia’s most-capped player and top scorer at the 2014 World Cup, has announced his retirement from the national team.

In a video posted on his social media, the 35-year-old said it was time to close one of the most important chapters of his life. He currently plays for Atlético Nacional.

Rodríguez featured at the 2014, 2018 and 2026 World Cups, and at the 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2024 Copa América, where he was the standout as Colombia finished runners-up in 2024.

He made 131 appearances and scored 31 goals for Colombia, his last strike coming on 10 September 2024 in a 2-1 win over Argentina in matchday eight of 2026 qualifying. He is Colombia’s second-highest scorer.

His finest spell in the shirt came at Brazil 2014 with six goals, a tournament that propelled his move from Monaco to Real Madrid later that summer.

He wore the number 10 and also captained the side, approaching the role with responsibility and pride. He wished the national team well, acknowledged new generations, and thanked Colombia as he leaves at peace after giving everything.
