Newcastle are set to renew their interest in James Trafford in 2025

Newcastle United are set to renew their interest in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford in 2025, with the England international held in high regard by Toon boss Eddie Howe.

That's according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Newcastle are set to again test Burnley's resolve in the new year, although any move for Trafford is likely to come in the summer rather than in January.

Trafford has been key to Burnley's success this season, playing in 20 of their 21 league games, and it's believed that Burnley would be reluctant to let him go in mid-season owing to the fact it could derail their promotion push.

Still, Newcastle are willing to wait to get the man they view as the successor to Nick Pope and a man they came close to landing in the summer.

Newcastle United will make another James Trafford move in 2025

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle's interest in Trafford remains strong, and they weren't deterred by an ultimately unsuccessful play to bring the England stopper to the North East in the summer.

They report that Trafford was close to joining Newcastle before the season started, only for Burnley to ask for more money than Newcastle were willing and able to pay, which ultimately scuppered the deal.

The report reinforces the fact that Burnley won't be forthcoming to a January sale, but could well be willing to do business in the summer, although it's widely acknowldged that the fee demanded could vary depending on what league the Clarets end up in.

For Newcastle though, the main win is that the player is still keen on a move to St James' Park, and with Howe seeing him as the successor to Nick Pope, it seems likely the Magpies will return at some point.

James Trafford's stock has risen this season

After a largely negative debut season for Burnley last season, where he was exposed in the Premier League, Trafford has bounced back well in the Championship and managed to rebuild his reputation.

After Scott Parker brought in Vaclav Hladky in the summer, many feared it would be the end of Trafford at Burnley - and indeed it could've been if his move to Newcastle had gone through - but he's bounced back admirably.

He's been among the best goalkeepers in the second tier this season, and after also earning England call-ups recently, his stock has probably never been higher, so Burnley will feel they're in a great position to demand a handsome fee.
