Jamie Carragher has condemned Benfica’s handling of the Prestianni - Vinãcius Jr. controversy, drawing on Liverpool’s experience during the Luis Suárez and Patrice Evra affair.
"Most people in football look at this and think Benfica have got it badly wrong. Sometimes, when you are inside a club, judgement gets clouded and you back the player regardless, even on something as serious as racism." He was speaking on CBS Sports.
Carragher linked the episode to Liverpool’s past. "I have been in that position as a player, we had a similar situation where I think the whole football world looked at us and thought we had it completely wrong at Liverpool. An incident between Luis Suárez and Patrice Evra 10 or 15 years ago."
"It took a long time for us inside the club to accept we had got it badly wrong," he said. He stressed the need for a full investigation and suggested Benfica should revisit their stance if accusations are upheld. "I hope there is an investigation to get to the bottom of it and, if the accusation is correct, Benfica, Mourinho and people around the club can apologise."
Carragher also criticised the club’s social media reaction, saying that posting a tweet hours later questioning the validity of Vinícius Jr. and Real Madrid players "was poor".
