Jamie Redknapp declared Nottingham Forest’s 5-0 dismantling of Sunderland the result of the season after a stunning collapse at the Stadium of Light.
Trai Hume’s own goal set the tone and Forest were 4-0 up inside 37 minutes. According to Sunderland Echo, Redknapp told Sky Sports the scale of the away win and the quality on show made it stand out.
The defeat followed a 4-3 reverse at Aston Villa, leaving Regis Le Bris’ side with nine conceded across two matches. In 2026 they have shipped 27 Premier League goals, with only Tottenham Hotspur on 30 and Burnley on 31 faring worse.
While the loss damaged Sunderland’s push for Europe, it was a major step towards safety for Forest, who moved to 39 points, eight clear of Spurs in 18th. They now appear all but safe, needing one more draw to reach the 40-point mark.
Despite recent inconsistency, this was only Sunderland’s fourth home defeat of the season. They visit Wolves next Saturday, still four points off the top six, which could yield Champions League qualification if Aston Villa win the Europa League and remain in the top five.
