Fernández has played for Barcelona her whole life but is now preparing to sign for the new WSL side.

Why is Jana Fernández leaving Barcelona?

Jana Fernández joined Barcelona’s infamous La Masia academy at just 12-years-old.

11 years later, Fernández is now leaving the club that she has called home for half of her life.

The Barcelona defender is reportedly set to terminate her contract with the Spanish club, as the London City Lionesses are expected to acquire the talented Spaniard on a free transfer.

Even though there is to be no high transfer fee, the departure of Fernández would help Barcelona with their cap constraints under fair play laws, with six other stars also departing the club this summer.

Fernández played in 23 of Barcelona’s Liga F games last season in her first real breakout year at the club.

After an impressive year with Barcelona, Fernández earned a call-up to Euro 2025 this summer where she featured in two group games.

Despite being favourites with betting websites to win Euro 2025, Spain fell at the final hurdle against England.

Although she enjoyed a successful season with the team, it is believed that Fernández is leaving with the hopes of playing more minutes.

Barcelona have some of the best defenders in the world and the competition to start alongside the likes of Ona Batlle, Irene Paredes and Mapi León is tough.

A busy start to the WSL for London City Lionesses

The new WSL season is just around the corner and the London City Lionesses have been extremely busy already.

Michele Kang’s team became the first club to ever earn promotion to the WSL without an affiliation to a men’s team.

Ahead of their first campaign in the top flight, the Lionesses have signed almost a full team of superstars.

London City Lionesses transfers

  • Sanni Franssi – Real Sociedad (free agent)
  • Freya Godfrey – Arsenal (undisclosed fee)
  • Isa Kaardinal – Ajax (undisclosed fee)
  • Elene Lete – Real Sociedad (undisclosed fee)

  • Paula Partido – Real Madrid (undisclosed fee)
  • Poppy Pattinson – Brighton (free)

Fernández is set to become the club’s 12th signing this summer and she’s certainly one of the most exciting additions.

The Spaniard could make her debut for the Lionesses as soon as August 21st, with the team facing off against Lyon in their penultimate pre-season test.

London City also play against Leicester on August 29th in their final game before the WSL begins.
