Jarell Quansah, an England and former Liverpool international, was in no mood to celebrate after his third Bundesliga goal, an 88th-minute equaliser, salvaged a 1-1 draw with Mainz. He instead lamented Leverkusen's lack of cohesion.
Perhaps with attention on their Champions League campaign, Kasper Hjulmand's side have struggled for consistency in 2026, with three wins from eight league matches leaving them sixth. Results against lower-table teams have been notably poor.
They were beaten by Union Berlin last week and have now drawn 1-1 with relegation candidates Mainz and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
After a major summer overhaul, Leverkusen dismissed head coach Erik ten Hag earlier this season, judging he was not the right fit to help the new group gel.
"In my opinion, it's not good enough. We didn't win and that's not good enough. We've been saying this a lot lately: Not enough energy, not enough intensity. I just wasn't enough again today." He told Leverkusen's club TV channel.
"I feel like we're playing against ourselves at the moment. We don't play together enough and we have different ideas. We're playing in a disorganized manner and need to regroup."
