Liverpool suffered a big blow ahead of their Premier League clash against Manchester City.

The Reds boss, Arne Slot, confirmed on Thursday that Joe Gomez has undergone surgery to cure his hamstring issues, and he will be sidelined for a long spell.

Liverpool will also be without Conor Bradley for the next two Premier League fixtures, at least after he appeared to have picked up a muscle injury.

Bradley came on as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 66th minute, but he picked up a late injury against Aston Villa.

Alexander-Arnold has recently returned from an injury lay-off, and Slot is using him carefully.

That leaves Liverpool with a shortage of options at the back, and this could open the door for Jarell Quansah to make a strong impact.

Quansah featured heavily under Jurgen Klopp last season, but Slot has sparingly used him. The Dutch boss is a keen admirer of Quansah’s talents, and he has recently said the 22-year-old has impressed him heavily in training.

With games coming thick and fast, Quansah can now expect to feature regularly, at least until Gomez or Bradley returns.

Quansah can play as a centre-back as well as a right-back, and he is a very handy and reliable option from the bench. It is unlikely that Quansah will start ahead of Ibrahima Konate or Alexander-Arnold against Man City or Newcastle United, but he can definitely get some minutes from the bench.

This is a big chance for him to make a real impact. He needs to grab the opportunities with both hands and show his quality that he can push Konate for a regular starting place.
