Manchester United’s director of football Jason Wilcox insists that the club remains determined to compete in all competitions. The Red Devils are preparing for an exciting season after enjoying a spectacular run under Michael Carrick last campaign.
The English manager took charge in January and registered 12 wins and just two defeats in 17 Premier League games, powering his team to third in the table. United subsequently secured qualification for the Champions League and are now working to upgrade their squad over the summer.
The Premier League giants have already signed Andrey Santos, Karl Darlow, and Youri Tielemans, and further additions are expected before the end of the transfer window. Wilcox has now reiterated the Red Devils’ stance on the matter.
In his column for United’s official Yearbook, Wilcox expressed pride at the progress made in the last year. He wrote: “Last season, I wrote about the sense of responsibility to help get this great club back to the top.”
“A year on, we can be proud of the progress we have made towards our ultimate goals. We have taken great strides forward and can be confident that we have the right structures and processes in place to achieve regular and sustained success in the future.”
“Michael has done an excellent job and thoroughly earned the opportunity to continue as head coach of our men’s team. The results speak for themselves, with United picking up the highest points tally in the Premier League since he returned to the club. Everyone is delighted with Michael’s leadership and total alignment with our club’s values.”
Wilcox went on to insist that the club remain committed to building a winning team, adding: “The hard work continues behind the scenes to prepare his first-team squad for next season. We can all be proud of the winning culture that is developing at Carrington as we continue to build a talented and determined group of players ready to compete across all four competitions.”
Wilcox also reflected on the progress made by the Women’s team and the club’s academy. He wrote: “Seeing our women’s team reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, in our first season experiencing European football, was one of the highlights of the whole campaign. We have taken valuable learnings from competing on multiple fronts, which will stand the club in great stead as we continue to support and grow our women’s team.”
“We are also making great progress with the Academy. There is so much fantastic work going on with our younger age groups, which will ultimately build the foundations for our future successes. From an Under-18s and Under-21s perspective, achieving four first-team debuts and reaching the finals of several national competitions, including the FA Youth Cup, made for a campaign that all our Academy staff should be proud of.”
“You can sense the anticipation across the club for another exciting season ahead. I hope that you are all also looking forward to the return of special European nights for our men’s team at Old Trafford.
“On behalf of everyone at the club I am grateful for the opportunity to directly thank you for your unwavering support, the importance of which certainly does not go unnoticed or underappreciated. We remain hugely ambitious, and our burning desire for every Manchester United team to compete for the biggest honours continues to drive us forward.”
United are set to begin their preparations for the upcoming campaign by facing Wrexham in Helsinki on Saturday, 18 July, in their first pre-season friendly. While fans will be hoping to get a glimpse of Santos in the match, INEOS will have to step up their recruitment to enable Carrick to have a competitive squad for the new season.
