Mexico have wasted little time in reshaping their coaching staff following their dramatic World Cup exit, with Javier Aguirre stepping down just hours after the 3-2 defeat to England and Rafa Márquez taking over as national team manager.
Aguirre announced his resignation after the heartbreaking loss at the Azteca Stadium, where Mexico's hopes of a memorable run on home soil came to an end despite a spirited display.
The 67-year-old leaves after his third spell in charge of El Tri, having overseen 34 matches since returning to the role.
The co-hosts pushed England all the way in the last-16 clash, but Jude Bellingham's brace and Harry Kane's penalty ultimately proved enough to send Thomas Tuchel's side into the quarter-finals. Julián Quiñones and a late spot-kick kept Mexico in contention until the closing stages, but they were unable to find an equaliser.
The Mexican Football Federation has moved swiftly by promoting Rafa Márquez, who served as Aguirre's assistant throughout the tournament. The former Barcelona defender captained Mexico at five World Cups and is widely regarded as one of the country's greatest-ever players.
