Jaydee Canvot, 19, has cemented a place at Crystal Palace since his €23m move from Toulouse last summer, and should start Wednesday’s Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano at 21:00.

“I did not want to leave just for the sake of it. What matters to me is the pitch,” he said to L'Équipe on 10 October.

A reserved character, he took time to adapt before establishing himself alongside Maxence Lacroix and Jean-Philippe Mateta, both mainstays for the Eagles and in France’s World Cup squad.

Since Marc Guéhi’s January move to Manchester City, the midfielder by trade has earned a starting role in Palace’s back three. Rested for Sunday’s 1-2 defeat to Arsenal with the final in mind, he had previously completed 11 straight matches in all competitions and is on 35 appearances this season.

An early slip, notably an error against Larnaca in a 0-1 group defeat on 23 October, did not define him. In the last 16 against the same opponents, a 0-0 then 2-1 after extra time, he looked far more assured.

In the Premier League he has 85 duels won, 39 tackles and only 12 fouls in 20 matches. Manager Oliver Glasner has praised his patience and work.

His form has drawn Barcelona’s attention. Paris Saint-Germain were already monitoring him before he left Toulouse, and his progress has strengthened that interest, but nothing concrete has emerged and he is under contract until 2029.
