Jayden Joseph welcomes Leicester right-back fight as Russell Martin ponders opener | OneFootball

Jayden Joseph has welcomed competition with close friend Bade Aluko for Leicester City’s right-back berth, with Russell Martin’s choice for the opening fixtures still unclear.

"It’s all good. Me and Bade are good friends so [it’s] friendly competition. We both want to play obviously so we’ll keep pushing each other to get the best out of each other and to ultimately help the team," he told LeicestershireLive.

City begin tomorrow afternoon in the Carabao Cup first round against Northampton Town, then start their League One campaign at Notts County the following week.

Joseph returned from a loan at Tranmere Rovers to strong reviews after helping secure the club’s Football League status. The vacancy at right-back follows Ricardo Pereira’s exit, and Aluko, who has 11 appearances, has joined Joseph in impressing during pre-season.

"I learnt so much there, the jump from Under-21s to first-team football was huge. The physicality and intensity, I feel like Tranmere prepared me to come back here to show what I can do."

The 20-year-old is yet to make a competitive debut for Leicester after arriving from Manchester City’s academy in 2022. He has handled physical opposition in pre-season and showed his attacking side in defeat to Genoa.
