Jean-Louis Gasset died on Friday morning at 72, his entourage told L'Équipe. The influential French coach was long-time assistant to Laurent Blanc.

A midfielder who spent almost all his playing career at Montpellier, he moved into coaching, alternating early on between assistant roles, including with Luis Fernandez, and head jobs.

His defining partnership with Blanc ran from 2007 to 2016, beginning at Bordeaux. They won Ligue 1 in 2009, adding the Coupe de la Ligue and the Trophée des Champions that year.

Gasset then followed Blanc to France and PSG, where his honours grew with three Ligue 1 titles, three Coupes de la Ligue, two Coupes de France and three Trophées des Champions. PSG parted with both men in June 2016.

In January 2017 he returned to Montpellier as head coach, steering the club to safety over half a season. He then spent two years at Saint-Étienne before taking charge of Côte d’Ivoire in 2022.

After a poor group stage at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, he left his post and was replaced by assistant Émerse Faé, who went on to deliver an improbable title.

A month later he answered Marseille’s call to finish the season, which ended in a disappointing eighth place. He announced retirement afterwards, but returned mid last season to try to save Montpellier, leaving by mutual agreement after 21 matches as the club went down to Ligue 2.
