Jean-Louis Gasset, a defining figure of French football, died on Friday morning aged 72. According to L'Équipe, the news was confirmed by his entourage.

He spent nearly 50 years in the game, closely tied to Montpellier from midfielder with MHSC to his final spell as head coach, with a detour to the African continent.

Gasset played almost his entire career as a midfielder at Montpellier. He then began coaching there as an assistant before taking charge in 1998, replacing Michel Mézy at Louis Nicollin’s club.

Working alongside Laurent Blanc, he helped Bordeaux, with Yoann Gourcuff, to the Ligue 1 title in 2009. He later joined Blanc’s France staff for Euro 2012.

At Paris Saint-Germain, again with Blanc, he added to his honours. With Saint-Étienne and Yann M'Vila, ASSE finished fourth in 2018-2019, one of their best top-flight seasons this century.

He was the last coach to keep Bordeaux in Ligue 1. During his 2024 stint at Marseille, he oversaw the only European matches of his career as a head coach.

During MHSC’s 50th anniversary in 2024, he was serving as Montpellier head coach.
