Former Olympique de Marseille and Ivory Coast manager Jean-Louis Gasset has sadly passed away at 72 this Friday morning, Montpellier has reported. The son of Montpellier HSC founder Bernard Gasset was a popular and respected figure within French football. Gasset, a former midfielder who spent the whole of his playing career at Montpellier, rose to prominence as Laurent Blanc’s assistant coach in Bordeaux, the French national football team and PSG.
Blanc and Gasset went their separate ways in 2016, when PSG dismissed them both. Gasset then took the next step to become a manager. He coached Montpellier, Saint-Etienne, the Ivory Coast national football team and Olympique de Marseille. Les Phocéens hired him as Gennaro Gattuso’s replacement two years ago. Upon the expiry of his contract in 2024, OM signed Roberto de Zerbi.
During the 2024-2025, he signed for Montpellier again, but he could not prevent La Paillade from going down in the second-tier. Recently, he worked as a pundit for Ligue 1+, Ligue 1’s in-house TV channel. GFFN and the football community send their condolences to Gasset’s loved ones during this difficult time.
