Jean-Marc Furlan has a neurodegenerative illness, revealed by his wife in a book due out on one October.

The former Auxerre and Caen coach slipped out of the game in November 2023 after poor results with Caen. Extracts from Cécile Traverse Furland’s account, co-written with Clément Commolet and titled Jean-Marc Furlan, le don d'une vie, were published by Ouest-France.

The book links changes in his behaviour during his time at the Normandy club to the condition, which has weighed on the couple in recent years. It says the illness explains his quiet disappearance from football after his dismissal at SM Caen, and refers to disinhibition and a lack of filters in a setting where that is not tolerated.

His long-time candour, the spouse suggests, may ultimately have cost the 68-year-old his job. She writes that the more stress he felt, the more unguarded he became, and that she would not accept claims that what happened at Caen reflected who he was.

She also says concussions suffered during his playing career, then the demands of coaching, could have contributed to the illness.
