Crystal Palace will have to significantly improve their wage proposal if they are to persuade Jean-Philippe Mateta to sign fresh terms.

The Standard understands Palace have held talks with the striker about an extension, but discussions have stalled over his base salary.

Mateta joined permanently in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year deal that included a one-year option, which Palace triggered last December. His contract now runs to June 2027.

If improved terms cannot be agreed, he would be able to leave as a free agent in the summer of 2027. He would be 30 at expiry, so Palace may have to weigh up cashing in amid growing interest.

Mateta and his representatives have been open about his ambition to compete at the highest level, including the Champions League, a stance strengthened since he became a France senior international in October.

He has scored 54 goals in 172 appearances for the Eagles and is joint-fourth in this season’s Premier League scoring charts, behind only Erling Haaland, Igor Thiago and Danny Welbeck.

He is not the only senior player with an uncertain future at Selhurst Park, England centre-back Marc Guehi’s deal expires next summer.
