Conor Chaplin joined Portsmouth on loan late in the summer transfer window
Jed Wallace has explained what Conor Chaplin can bring to Portsmouth following his summer loan move from Ipswich Town.
The forward was unavailable last weekend due to Pompey’s clash against his parent club, with the side losing 2-1 at Portman Road.
The 28-year-old has so far made just two appearances since arriving late in the summer, playing in a 0-0 draw against Southampton and a 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday.
John Mousinho will be hoping that the forward can repeat his impressive goal scoring record from when he helped Ipswich gain promotion to the Premier League, when he contributed 13 goals and eight assists.
Chaplin is at Fratton Park on loan for the rest of the season, with the club aiming to improve on their 17th place finish in the previous campaign.
Wallace believes that Chaplin’s arrival at Portsmouth will be huge both on and off the pitch for Mousinho’s side, and will ease the burden on players like Colby Bishop and Josh Murphy.
Despite the loss to Ipswich, he believes that Pompey will be fine, also highlighting the signing of Adrian Segecic in the summer as a positive.
“Segecic I really like, and obviously the signing of Conor Chaplin on and off the pitch is a massive signing for that club,” said Wallace, via Not The Top 20 on YouTube.
“And I think he’s the one that can ease the pressure on Murphy and on Bishop because now they have three players that can really do something, and really create and score goals.
“I think Portsmouth will be fine.”
Portsmouth have made a mixed start to the new Championship season, with two defeats in their last two games leaving them 17th in the table.
Pompey have earned eight points from their opening seven fixtures, winning two, drawing two and losing three.
Mousinho will be keen to put an end to this three game winless run before the October international break, with two games between now and then.
Next up for Pompey is a home clash against Watford on 1 October in a 7.45pm kick-off.
Ipswich have a lot of attacking firepower in their squad, so Chaplin going on loan was potentially his best route to consistent game time.
While he obviously couldn’t feature last weekend due to loan rules, it’s clear that the 28-year-old will be an important part of Mousinho’s plans.
His recent experience in helping the Tractor Boys gain promotion to the Premier League will be a great asset for Pompey to have in their dressing room.
His performances in that promotion campaign were also impressive, and if he can play like that again this season then he is someone that has the potential to power Mousinho’s side up the Championship table once he gets firing.
