Jeglertz: This team want even more

Andrée Jeglertz says City’s FA Cup semi-final turnaround against Chelsea shows the hunger in his players to build on our WSL title triumph.

After being crowned champions of England for the first time in a decade on Wednesday night, the Blues booked our place in the FA Cup final with a 3-2 extra time win over the holders.

Jeglertz’s side would’ve perhaps been forgiven for not hitting our usual standards at Stamford Bridge on the back of a special night in our history just four days prior, but our Head Coach felt City’s display spoke volumes of the team’s character and desire.

And with an FA Cup against Brighton now on the horizon, his players are desperate to add another trophy to the cabinet in the coming weeks.

“If you saw the training sessions on Friday or Saturday, you’d see there was no lack of energy in this group,” he said.

“It’s a group of winners that want to do more.

“Having this tough game directly after was the best thing that could happen, where we can show we are a great team and we aren’t just satisfied with one title, we want the next one.”

It’d looked like our FA Cup journey was coming to an end with City 2-0 down in the 85th minute courtesy of an early Erin Cuthbert strike and Sam Kerr header.

But goals from Mary Fowler and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw in the space of six minutes pulled us level and forced extra time, with the latter then grabbing the winner in the 103rd minute.

City were holding on at the end, with Khiara Keating making a phenomenal save deep into added time to keep Sjoeke Nusken’s header out, but we ultimately got the job done.

And while Jeglertz admitted it was difficult to give a full assessment of the match immediately after the final whistle, he was quick to hail his team’s never-say-die attitude.

He added: “I don’t know if I can sum that up. I said to the players after that it’s a tough game and Chelsea are good, but there’s something in the group where we never give up.

“I’ve said it a lot of times, but this is good proof of that. You can see it in the eyes of the players that they know we still have an opportunity to do this.

“We did some changes, players coming in with new energy, we did some tactical changes but overall, the players’ mentality to never give up is why we’re here.”
