Jennifer Hermoso has signed a one-year deal with Atlético de Madrid, returning as a free agent to her formative club at 36 for what should be the final challenge of her career.

The club said in a post that she is coming back for a third spell.

Hermoso joined Atlético aged 12 and made her professional debut there. The midfielder will wear number nine.

The Spain World Cup winner previously played for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. She moved to Mexico in 2022, first with Pachuca then Tigres de Monterrey, spending two and a half years there.

In August 2023, Spain’s all-time leading scorer was forcibly kissed during the World Cup medal ceremony by then federation president Luis Rubiales, who was later fined €10,800 for sexual assault. The incident sparked international outrage and he resigned. Rubiales has also been accused of corruption in a separate legal case.
