Toulouse have turned to Jens Berthel Askou as the potential successor to Carles Martinez Novell. According to L'Équipe, the Motherwell head coach is being lined up.
The former centre-back steered Motherwell to fourth in Scotland this season, behind Celtic, Rangers and the surprise package Heart of Midlothian. That surge has caught Toulouse’s eye.
Early in his coaching career he worked at Vendsyssel and Horsens in Denmark. He won a league and cup double in the Faroe Islands with HB Torshavn in 2020, then served as assistant at Sparta Prague and at Copenhagen before taking charge of IFK Göteborg. He has since delivered a remarkable campaign at Motherwell, qualifying for Europe with intense, attacking football that thrilled supporters.
His side were also close to tilting the title race towards Hearts. They held Celtic until the last minute of stoppage time in the penultimate round before a very debatable penalty was awarded, ending 2-3.
This season has borne out chairman Kyrk Macmillan’s rationale when appointing him, that his background with major clubs, record of success and development of young players matched the club’s philosophy. He cited 26 players handed top-level debuts in five and a half seasons and said the data impressed, but above all described Askou as an ambitious leader determined to take the job.
Askou is ambitious but notably itinerant. Since 2015 he has already worked at 10 clubs, roughly one per year.
