Jeremy Jacquet nearing Liverpool move | OneFootball

Liverpool are closing in on a major summer addition after Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet (20) travelled to Merseyside for a medical ahead of a proposed £60m move to Anfield, according to reports from BBC Sport.

The 20-year-old centre-back is expected to complete a switch at the end of the season, with Liverpool agreeing a deal worth £55m plus a further £5m in add-ons. Jacquet would sign a five-year contract, running until 2031, with the option of an additional year.

Although Liverpool had explored the possibility of bringing the France Under-21 international in during the January window, Rennes were unwilling to sanction a mid-season departure. The Ligue 1 club have instead accepted a summer move, allowing Jacquet to complete the campaign in France.

Jacquet has emerged as one of the most highly rated young defenders in Europe, attracting interest from Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal. Chelsea held talks with the player this winter, but are not prepared to match Liverpool’s offer.

Liverpool’s interest reflects longer-term planning in Arne Slot’s squad, particularly in central defence. Ibrahima Konate is out of contract at the end of the season, while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are entering the final years of their deals. The Reds also failed to land Marc Guehi last summer, with the England international later joining Manchester City.

A Rennes academy graduate, Jacquet has made 18 appearances this season and impressed with his composure, aerial strength, and ability to play in both a back three and a back four. Liverpool view him as a significant investment for the future, continuing a recruitment strategy that prioritises succession planning alongside immediate competitiveness.
