Jess Fishlock is in conversations regarding a role with the Wales national team, despite still playing professional football for Seattle Reign.

The Welsh veteran retired from international football last year but is looking to remain around the team moving forward.

Jess Fishlock: A Welsh icon

There aren’t many Welsh players who have built up as impressive a profile as Jess Fishlock has during her career.

The veteran made her debut at just 15-years-old for Cardiff Ladies and her talent was clear from a young age.

Fishlock has played all over the world for clubs in Wales, England, Scotland, Netherlands, Germany, France, Australia and most recently the USA.

The 39-year-old currently plays for NWSL side Seattle Reign and she is in her 24th season – making her one of the longest serving players in women’s football history.

It is her international career that Fishlock will be most proud of however. The Wales midfielder made her international debut in 2006 aged 19.

After just under 20 years of international duty, there aren’t many who can say they served their country better than Fishlock did.

In 2017 she became the first player – man or woman – to reach 100 caps for Wales. With 48 goals in 166 appearances, she is also the top goalscorer for her nation.

Fishlock’s biggest achievement for Wales is reaching and playing in Euro 2025 as the nation qualified for their first-ever major tournament.

Fishlock exploring Wales role

After such a stellar career on the international stage, it is no surprise to see Fishlock staying involved.

There have already been rumours about the veteran joining Wales’ coaching staff with Rhian Wilkinson looking to add to her backroom.

Fishlock herself has now confirmed the interest even if she was purposefully vague with her words.

“I can’t say [if she’s been offered a role], but we had a brief conversation about me being involved and what it would look like – I just didn’t realise it would go public.

“But we have had conversations, we are on the same page, just fleshing out the details.”

Wales play their first international break in March this year as they begin their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Fishlock may choose to wait until retirement before she moves into coaching, but that milestone is surely not too far away for the veteran.
