Former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch has called for Manchester City to be relegated, arguing the club should face a severe sanction after the Premier League found them guilty of breaching financial rules between 2009/10 and 2017/18.
"I think Man City should be punished severely. I think they should have to go down, and by the way, everyone knew about it. Everyone knew," said Marsch, who referenced Everton and Nottingham Forest having points deducted in the campaign Leeds were relegated.
He also questioned how, in summer 2022, Leeds and City were the only clubs to report profits, noting Leeds sold Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips to City and did not have deep-pocketed owners. He described City’s position as a joke.
Marsch further cast doubt on City’s claimed £52m fee for Erling Haaland, saying he saw inconsistencies but felt there was little he could do.
The case findings stated City artificially inflated revenue by more than £900m through sham sponsorship agreements. City deny wrongdoing and have appealed the decision, maintaining they are innocent and that a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence supports their case.
The club has lodged its appeal and says it will respect due process until all proceedings are complete.
