Raul Jimenez fired Mexico into the World Cup last 16 with a superb first-half strike in a 2-0 win over Ecuador.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, two Wolves players have now advanced, with Norway’s David Moller Wolfe also through.

Kick-off in the round of 32 tie was delayed by an hour due to a severe thunderstorm. Julian Quinones opened the scoring, then Jimenez rifled into the top corner on 31 minutes as the co-hosts eased past Ecuador for their first World Cup knockout win since 1986.

Jimenez, a fan favourite at Wolves after five years before re-signing this summer as a free agent, also scored in the tournament’s opening game as Mexico beat South Africa. Mexico have won all four matches, scoring eight and conceding none, the first team to start with four consecutive clean sheets at a World Cup since Italy in 1990.

If England beat DR Congo tonight, they will face Mexico in the last 16 at the Azteca Stadium.

Wolfe booked Norway’s place by beating Ivory Coast 2-1. Antonio Nusa put them ahead before Amad Diallo levelled on 74 minutes, then Erling Haaland finished four minutes from time. Wolfe completed the 90, and Norway will meet Brazil on Sunday.

Next up for Wolves representation, Sasa Kalajdzic features for Austria against Spain on Thursday, before goalkeeper Jose Sa and Portugal face Croatia on Friday.
