Wantaway wonderkid has come to a decision

JJ Gabriel is said to have picked Chelsea as his preferred option if he stays in England, as Manchester United make progress on signing a replacement for the wantaway wonderkid.

Gabriel has formally asked United to cancel his academy registration in a shock development last week, but the club are continuing efforts to try to change the 15-year-old’s mind.

The teenager’s situation could become clearer when he turns 16 on 6 October. His Irish passport could allow him to move to an EU club, although any transfer would still require FIFA approval.

That possibility has encouraged Real Madrid and Barcelona to step up their interest, with both clubs able to offer Gabriel a potential route through their reserve sides and towards senior football.

A move to Spain appears more than staying in the Premier League, despite, according to TEAMtalk every elite club having pitched their plans to Gabriel. Chelsea, it is claimed, are proving the most attractive English destination for Gabriel, with talks having reportedly taken place.

While United remain hopeful of keeping their academy star, they are also preparing for the possibility that he leaves.

The same outlet claims that Man Utd have identified Lens teenager Mezian Mesloub as a potential alternative. United’s scouting department have carried out extensive work on the 16-year-old, who has already made his senior debut for the French club.

Mesloub made an immediate impression, scoring just 11 seconds into his professional debut against Nantes last season. He has since attracted attention for his technical ability, creativity and willingness to take responsibility in attack.

United face competition for Mesloub, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain said to be also monitoring the youngster. However, Brexit regulations mean he cannot join an English club until he turns 18, making a move to the Premier League more complicated.

For now, United’s priority remains Gabriel, but their interest in Mesloub shows they are planning for the possibility that their highly-rated academy forward ultimately chooses a different path.
