JJ Gabriel, the brightest Manchester United prodigy in years, has reportedly asked to leave the club in a shocking development. Clubs are circling around the 15-year-old for his signature and to be the ones that develop him further. Among those clubs, Real Madrid are one of the strongest contenders to pluck the kid out of Manchester and into a grander system. Here’s why this is so important.

Who is JJ Gabriel?

Junior Joseph Andreou O’Cearuill is a Manchester United youth player who previously had developmental spells at Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham United. The teenager is one of the hottest goal-scoring prospects around, having already scored 40+ goals across the U18 and the U21 levels. The 15-year-old garnered the nickname ‘Kid Messi’ for himself when videos of him playing went viral half a decade ago.

Since then, Gabriel has consistently lived up to that moniker and has displayed soccer abilities far greater than his age, consistently playing in higher age brackets like U18, U17 and U16. At just 14 years of age, he was training with the Manchester United first team and was subsequently named U18 Premier League Player of the Season last season.

Just last month, he debuted with the first team in a preseason friendly against Atlético Madrid, and looked to be on the pathway for sporadic soccer with the first team this season before he surprisingly asked for his registration to be canceled just a month after playing for the senior squad for the first time.

It is a strange predicament, especially as United sources report that Gabriel was all set to make his official first-team debut against Brighton in the EFL Cup, a match that ultimately United lost. Gabriel, nowhere to be seen, has just three weeks to go before he turns 16 years old, but he will still have a year left on his registration. Manchester United can challenge the request, and Premier League rules mean a youth registration cannot simply be canceled unilaterally.

Why It Is Not A Simple Move

He doesn’t have a release clause, and United won’t just let him walk away. JJ Gabriel cannot simply “leave” Manchester United before turning 16 because he remains registered with the club. According to reporting from The Athletic, if Gabriel, currently on a non-EU English passport, has or obtains a European Union passport, then he could move to a club in Europe when he turns 16 on Tuesday, October 6. United are exploring whether he holds such documentation from EU nations like Ireland or Cyprus.

Under the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, international transfers of players under the age of 18 are heavily restricted. However, there is an important exception for players aged between 16 and 18 moving within the European Union.

That means Gabriel’s potential Irish passport is particularly important. If he holds Irish citizenship, he could potentially use the EU transfer exception to move from England to a European club once he turns 16. And that’s where a move to Real Madrid starts to materialize.

Why Real Madrid wants JJ Gabriel?

Real Madrid is currently studying the complex situation of the young Manchester United player, with sources from ESPN and The Athletic confirming their interest. Spain is a super destination for any developing player, as seen by famed academies like La Masia, La Fábrica, Zubieta and more.

Los Blancos have recently had the habit of scooping up young talents early in their careers as opposed to outright Galactismo, with the signings of Yan Diomande, Endrick and Carlos Espi some of the recent examples. It is without a doubt that Florentino Pérez would love to invest early into Gabriel stocks, especially as a boy dubbed the “Kid Messi”, Madrid’s eternal haunter.

Real Madrid Castilla are a fully functioning professional club rather than an internal team like Manchester United. Moreover, Castilla play in the third tier of professional Spanish soccer, where their opponents are not youth teams of other clubs like it is in Premier League 2, a closed league where Manchester United U21s play. The players in Spain are not restricted by age, unlike PL2, where Gabriel’s opponents are all fellow youth academy players under a certain age limit.

A difference in the competitive level of both environments plays a huge factor in a player’s development, which is why Gabriel is fed up with playing alongside such players and feels like he wants a step up.

In England, if an elite prospect like Gabriel outgrows his level but doesn’t get called up to the senior team, he continues playing against other teenagers in low-stakes academy fixtures. In contrast, at Real Madrid Castilla, he would instantly be integrated into a highly competitive, physical environment playing senior men’s soccer in front of hostile crowds in the Spanish third tier.

While the pressure will be higher, the room for development is also bigger. It will help him develop his physicality, pressure handling and other factors that he doesn’t get in a low-risk, low-stakes environment like PL2.

Will He Move?

As of now, no move has been confirmed. Manchester United are trying hard to convince him to stay, but a lack of urgency to get him playing competitive soccer has left a bad taste in Gabriel’s mouth. He might be seeing the likes of Rio Ngumoha, Max Dowman, etc., who were all fast-tracked by their clubs and playing senior soccer, and wonder whether something like that can be done at his club as well.

Even if he does, Manchester United don’t have the brightest of futures ahead and he would not want to waste his developmental years helping bail a team out of dreadful situations instead of developing freely. At Real Madrid, he will be playing in a professional league, train at Valdebebas, play the UEFA Youth Leagues and more on a professional contract. And if things go well, he might very well be playing for the senior team in no time.
