Shelbourne FC is happy to announce that JJ Lunney will be remaining with the club after putting pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Reds. An ever-present in the Reds’ midfield since joining the club in December 2020, JJ has seen and done it all in a Red jersey. His cultured play in the centre of the park has become a synonymous with the club, and the Swords native is delighted to continue his tale at Tolka Park.
Speaking to ShelsTV JJ said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have re-signed for this great club. I have been here a long time, and it’s great that there are still more years yet to come. I have been through a lot with Shelbourne FC, and I have grown to love the club, so choosing to stay was a no-brainer for me. I feel that I still have a lot more to achieve with the club and I’m really excited for the challenges that lie ahead. I’d like to thank the fans and everyone at the club for their backing and for their support.”
Manager John Russell was keen look to the attributes that JJ possesses: “I am delighted that JJ has committed his future to Shelbourne Football Club. He’s a player who knows the club, understands what it means to represent it, and he has a really strong connection with the supporters. His experience, quality on the ball and ability to dictate the tempo of a game are important qualities for us.” He continued: “JJ has been a key part of this group for a number of years, and I’ve been really impressed with his attitude and his professionalism since I joined the club. He is someone who wants to improve every day in training, wants to compete and most importantly; wants to win. That fits exactly with the standards we are trying to set here. I am looking forward to seeing JJ have a big impact on the rest of this season and beyond.”
Shelbourne FC Technical Director Luke Byrne said of the midfielder: “Re-signing JJ on a long-term contract is massive for us as we look to build for the present as well as the future. He knows what it takes to compete and to win at this club and has proven that he is a top midfielder in the league. I think on the outside he is underappreciated, but he certainly isn’t within Shelbourne Football Club. He has turned down approaches from other clubs which underlines the loyalty that JJ has, and why he is so special to us.”
