FC Barcelona were able to win 2-0 against Getafe in their last league game, getting 11 points clear at the top of the league table, and virtually ensuring a successful defense of their La Liga title. While the title race now looks all but settled, the match carried added significance for one player in particular, Joan Garcia.
The Spanish goalkeeper delivered his second consecutive clean sheet, taking his tally to 14 in La Liga and 17 across all domestic competitions, including contributions in the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
This leaves Joan Garcia with the best goals conceded ratio in the league at 0.70, putting him in prime position to win the Zamora Trophy, awarded by Marca to the most efficient goalkeeper in La Liga. However, he is still one step away from officially entering the rankings.
As per the competition rules, goalkeepers must feature in at least 28 matches for a minimum of 60 minutes to qualify. According to Mundo Deportivo, Joan Garcia is currently on 27 appearances, meaning he only needs to play against Osasuna to meet the requirement and take control of the standings.
At present, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois leads the rankings with a coefficient of 0.86 after conceding 24 goals in 28 matches, although he is currently sidelined through injury. Getafe’s David Soria and Villarreal’s Luiz Junior follow behind, but neither can match the Barcelona keeper’s superior numbers.
Barring an unlikely heavy defeat against Osasuna, Joan Garcia is set to climb to the top of the Zamora standings next matchday. With Barcelona closing in on the league title, the 24-year-old now has a clear path to also finishing the season as La Liga’s most reliable goalkeeper.
