Joan Garcia reveals Barcelona ambitions ahead of new season

The last two years have seen the goalkeeper Joan Garcia make a huge leap in his career. After emerging as a standout goalie with Espanyol in the Spanish first division, he completed a move to one of the biggest clubs in Spain, FC Barcelona, last summer, quickly becoming a starter and the long-term bet of the club for the goalkeeping position.

His performances in his first season with the Blaugrana club were also excellent, as he won the Zamora Trophy. Furthermore, these performances forced the Spanish national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, to change his well-established goalkeeper hierarchy by calling up Garcia for the World Cup 2026.

Although he did not get to play any minutes in this competition, the Barcelona goalkeeper ended the tournament with a winner’s medal, as Spain won the World Cup. Currently, he is enjoying his vacation, which started belatedly due to the World Cup. One of the activities he has undertaken during these holidays is the organization of a training campus for children.

While attending this campus, he also talked to SPORT, and commented on several aspects related to Barcelona. For the next season, the goalkeeper had a clear objective, i.e., winning the UEFA Champions League:

“I have been at Barça for a year. We won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup, and this year I have won the World Cup, so obviously the objective for next season is the Champions League. The World Cup is the biggest title at international level, and the Champions League is the trophy that comes closest to it at club level. It is the goal I have set for myself this year.”

However, he also warned his teammates not to make this desire an obsession:

“It has to be a middle ground. Obsessing over it is not good either because the negative effect can be very big if the objective is not achieved, but we have a lot of confidence that we can do it.”

When asked about Julian Alvarez’s signing, Garcia was not able to reveal much:

“These are things that do not depend on us. There are many situations that we are not aware of, and it would be a mistake to speak without knowing the full picture. Personally, I have a lot of confidence in Deco’s work and his sporting management. We have a very competitive squad, and I am sure they will build the best team possible.”

Meanwhile, he wanted Ferran Torres to stay at Barcelona despite his links with PSG:

“He is a great player who contributes a lot to us both on and off the pitch. If I could choose, of course I would want him to stay.”

The Barcelona goalkeeper was happy with the new signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi:

“I like them. They are players with a profile that the coach likes, and that is the most important thing. I am sure they will contribute a lot to us.”

As far as he himself was concerned, the player was clear that he is happy at the Blaugrana club:

“I am where I want to be, calm and without headaches.”

The goalkeeper assured that he continues to work to remain at his best level even during the holidays:

“I am on holiday because I am not with the team, but I am not standing still. I continue training, and because there are no matches, I can push myself much more. I am preparing to be a starter on the first day of competition.”

The Barcelona goalie sent the president Joan Laporta his best wishes after the latter suffered a heart problem yesterday:

“I saw it yesterday, I didn’t know about it. Luckily, we have seen that he is fine and that everything was just a scare. From here, I send him lots of encouragement. I am sure he is in very good hands and being well looked after. When I see him, I will give him a big hug.”
