Barcelona president Joan Laporta has this week moved to afford well-earned credit to the club’s sporting director, Deco.
This comes amid confirmation that it was the Portuguese who proved the decisive figure in securing the signature of Hansi Flick.
Tactician Flick is of course in the midst of nothing short of a spectacular debut campaign to date on the Barcelona bench.
With the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey already secured, the Blaugrana find themselves clear atop La Liga, and in the semi-finals of the Champions League, too.
Nothing short of a historic term could therefore be concluded over the weeks ahead.
Whilst a host of Barcelona’s leading stars have proven central to as much, the bulk of the credit, in truth, must go to the aforementioned Flick.
The German has found a way to get the best out of the likes of Iñigo Martínez, Pedri, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, all of whom have taken their games to a new level under the watch of their new boss.
Speaking during an appearance in front of the media on Monday, the subject of exactly how Flick made his way to Catalunya’s capital was therefore put to Joan Laporta.
And the Spanish patron, in quotes provided to RAC1 (as cited by Mundo Deportivo), went on to explain:
“The one who decided that Flick would be the first-team coach was Deco. It’s the signing of Deco and Bojan. I liked him from the start, I wanted to sign him from the start. And as president I always have things to say, but it was them who analyzed him from a human and sporting perspective.”
