Joao Cancelo reveals why his Barcelona wondergoal was so special | OneFootball

FC Barcelona put in another dominant performance last night as they played a midweek La Liga game against the newly promoted Racing Club side. The Blaugranes won this game 7-2, with Raphinha scoring a hat-trick and Lamine Yamal and Gabriel Jesus also scoring a goal each.

The rest of the two goals came from an unexpected source, i.e., Joao Cancelo, who once again started on the right flank. He opened the score around 8 minutes into the game, and scored an amazing goal from outside of the box.

Then, later in the first half, he took another long shot, which again found the back of the net, but this goal was officially given as an own goal because the ball hit a defender and deflected.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the Portuguese fullback also talked to the media after the match. He expressed his feelings about the first goal in particular, which was quite special for him:

“It was the best goal of my career. And it was even more special because it came at this club. Since the start of last season, I have wanted to come here. I haven’t had that many opportunities to start, but I have always trained well to help the team when called upon. I needed this goal to gain more confidence. I achieved that. You need a little bit of luck, but the important thing is that the team won.”

The defender identified fitness and competition as key factors that have allowed Barcelona to have such a good start to the new season:

“All the players are in good physical shape and ready to play. It is important to have competition within the team; it is healthy. We all have the objective of winning everything this year. It may happen, and we are going to do everything possible to make it happen.”

Although there was never really any doubt, with this performance, Joao Cancelo has once again shown why Hansi Flick was keen to have him in his Barcelona team last summer. Hopefully, he will continue performing at this level, and contributing regular goals throughout the season.
