Joao Cancelo was the only addition that FC Barcelona made to their squad in the last winter transfer window as they signed him from the Saudi side Al-Hilal for a half-season loan. The Portuguese fullback proved to be quite a valuable addition to the Catalan team, and did not need a lot of time to get the starting spot over Alejandro Balde.

For now, his loan period is set to expire on 30th June, but the Blaugranes are already negotiating with the Saudi side to continue having him in their team for the next side.

Meanwhile, the player himself does not seem to have forgotten about Barcelona, the side where he wants to continue playing going forward, even as he is currently in North America to play for his Portuguese national team in the World Cup.

As SPORT has reported, the defender addressed a press conference ahead of his side’s second group phase match against Uzbekistan, and talked about his affection for the Blaugrana club:

“I really like Barça, but playing for Portugal is different. I am representing my country, my friends I used to play with in the street. For me, it is a pleasure to be here.”

While he would be keen to complete his move to Barcelona as soon as possible, his immediate concern would be to help his Portuguese national team in the World Cup. This is particularly the case as the Iberian side has not started the competition in the best of fashion, having managed only a draw in the first group phase game, against Democratic Republic of Congo.

Thus, their upcoming game against Uzbekistan could prove to be crucial for them, as it can determine their progression to the next round of the competition. With all the talent in their ranks, Portugal is one of the favorites to win the World Cup, and hopefully, Joao Cancelo would be able to help his team achieve this objective, before returning to Barcelona for the next season.
