Joao Gomes says he remains hopeful of a World Cup call despite Wolves’ grim campaign, and is intent on finishing strongly.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the midfielder has been a mainstay this season as Wolves slide to an inevitable relegation.

He looked likely to move in January amid interest from several clubs, but no bids arrived. He will stay until the end of the season, when it is almost certain he will depart with other senior players.

One factor behind a possible January exit was his push to make Brazil’s World Cup squad. He has 10 caps, only one in 2025, and accepts this season for him and the team may hinder his chances.

Gomes describes a World Cup appearance as one of his biggest dreams, while acknowledging Wolves’ situation makes the task harder. He says he can only keep giving his best, be ready if an opportunity comes, and that representing his country at a World Cup would make him very happy.

He is set to feature on Wednesday at the City Ground, with Wolves chasing a win that would take them level with Derby County’s record low points total. Gomes believes they have nothing to lose and can take more risks, both with and without the ball, in their current position.
