Manchester United need midfield reinforcements, especially at the base, given the quality at Ruben Amorim’s disposal currently.
Casemiro has turned his United career around after struggling under the Portuguese initially. He is the first name on the teamsheet at the moment but has not completed 90 minutes even a single time this campaign.
The Red Devils thought they had hit the jackpot when they signed Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain as the Brazilian’s long-term successor.
However, the Uruguayan has been a massive disappointment, and his fortunes have not changed even after his former Sporting CP boss took over at the helm.
With Kobbie Mainoo not suited to the defensive midfield role as per Amorim, the 20-time English league champions have been on the hunt for a viable alternative since the summer.
Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Elliot Anderson are among the top targets, but each of them will cost a bomb, which explains why INEOS have not launched an all-out assault.
The co-owners would prefer a Premier League-proven performer, and Joao Gomes of Wolverhampton Wanderers fits the bill.
The Brazilian midfield dynamo has been a long-term target for the club and with Wolves languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table, it is quite certain that the 24-year-old will not be at the Molineux for much longer.
As per Football Insider, the West Midlands outfit will not be able to resist any bids should they suffer relegation at the end of the campaign.
“Man United are among a number of teams plotting moves to sign Joao Gomes amid a growing expectation that Wolves could be forced to sell their star man.
“United could be boosted in their pursuit of the midfielder as Wolves will be forced to accept offers for him should they suffer relegation from the Premier League.
“As a result of the ongoing turmoil at Molineux, a number of “top clubs” in the Premier League and abroad have sent scouts to keep tabs on his performances.”
Wolves were powerless to stop Matheus Cunha from joining the Old Trafford side last summer, and Joao Gomes could follow suit.
The “pitbull” as he is called, has been among the few standout performers for the club, ranking in the top 95 percentile for duels won, and in the 90th percentile for dribbles completed (all stats via fotmob).
This shows that the Brazil international is not only adept at shielding the back four, but he is more than competent with the ball. This puts him a league above Ugarte based on current form.
