João Neves has suffered a muscular setback, with Paris Saint-Germain ruling the midfielder out of the Ligue 1 match against Lille. The club said he will not be involved, interrupting plans for a return to Portugal.

He trained away from the main group today after a muscle problem, and a cautious approach has kept him out of the squad for one of the more demanding fixtures at this stage of the French season.

PSG are also without Quentin Ndjantou, Kang-In Lee and Safonov, adding to the selection puzzle. Managing the Portugal international’s workload is considered a priority to avoid risks that could affect the rest of the campaign, with the champions focused on defending domestic and European titles.

The former Benfica player had been preparing to return to Portugal to face his old rival. PSG are scheduled to meet Sporting at Estádio José Alvalade on 20 January at 20:00, in the penultimate round of the regular phase of the Champions League.

This season Neves, valued at €110 million, has made 17 appearances for PSG, 10 in Ligue 1, four in the Champions League, one in the Super Cup, one in the Coupe de France and one in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. Across 1,289 minutes he has scored six goals and provided two assists.
