Chelsea striker Joao Pedro has withdrawn from the Brazil squad through injury ahead of their upcoming friendlies against Australia and India, the national team have said.

The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed on Wednesday that the forward will not be available for Carlo Ancelotti’s side during the forthcoming international window.

Joao Pedro has been replaced in the squad by Fluminense midfielder Matheus Martinelli.

A CBF statement read: “The athlete Martinelli, from Fluminense, was called up this Wednesday by coach Carlo Ancelotti for the friendlies of the Brazilian National Team against Australia and India.

“The player will replace Chelsea striker João Pedro, who is injured.”

The news will be a concern for Chelsea, who will now wait to discover the extent of the striker’s injury and whether it will force him to miss any game time.

Chelsea take on Brentford on Friday before the international break starts.
