João Schmidt marked his 100th Santos appearance in a 4-2 defeat at Chapecoense, the Brasileirão opener at Arena Condá on Wednesday. The midfielder started and wore the captain’s armband.

According to Diario Do Peixe, he has featured in every game this season and is a trusted option for head coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda.

In the Paulista, he started against Novorizontino, Palmeiras and Corinthians, and came off the bench versus Guarani and Red Bull Bragantino.

He is contracted until the end of 2027 and has won back his place since the Argentinian’s arrival in August last year. Signed in December 2023, he scored once in 16 Paulista games and registered one assist in 33 Série B outings in his first year at the club.

Last season he added one goal and one assist in 13 state matches, one assist in one Copa do Brasil match, and two goals plus two assists across 31 Brasileirão rounds. His Santos tally stands at 4 goals and 4 assists from 100 appearances.

Born in São Paulo, he turns 33 in May. He came through São Paulo, making his senior debut in 2012, and spent five seasons there with Brazil youth call-ups before joining Atalanta in 2017. His career also includes Vitória de Setúbal, Rio Ave, Nagoya Grampus and Kawasaki Frontale, collecting multiple honours in Japan before signing for Santos.
