Referee João Vitor Gobi has apologised for swearing during São Paulo v Santos at Morumbis on Saturday 31, and denied directing the remark at any player after accusations involving Vini Lira. The Federação Paulista de Futebol said in a statement that he accepted the term was inappropriate and insisted there was no direct offence.
The incident came in the first half of the San-São, the sixth round of the Campeonato Paulista, when players from both sides halted play to contest his handling of the game. Broadcast footage showed them confronting Gobi and asking him not to use that language.
At half-time, São Paulo defender Sabino and Santos midfielder Zé Rafael said the referee had insulted left-back Vini Lira, prompting immediate complaints on the touchline.
Gobi said the language was used in the heat of the contest while trying to keep disciplinary control. He accepted the expression was unsuitable in any setting and said it did not reflect his values, adding that he remains committed to a more respectful game.
Santos have not lodged a formal representation with the federation, opting instead to phone to register their complaint and seek clarification. Gobi has already officiated other derbies in this year’s state competition, including Corinthians v São Paulo and Palmeiras v Santos.
