Ruben Amorim is starting to turn things around at Manchester United, having overseen three consecutive Premier League wins.
On Saturday, United were comfortably the better side in the first hour against Brighton & Hove Albion, taking a 3-0 lead courtesy of goals from Matheus Cunha, Casemiro, and Bryan Mbeumo.
However, they had to overcome a late scare, as the visitors scored twice in the last 20 minutes before Mbeumo put the game to bed deep into stoppage time.
United’s veteran duo of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes were excellent in the first 70 minutes but the midfield lacked intensity in the final stages, especially after the ageing Brazilian was taken off.
The Red Devils are improving under Amorim, but their midfield depth, or lack thereof, could hinder their progress in the second half of the campaign, with both Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo yet to impress the Portuguese tactician.
According to Express, Amorim is eager to strengthen his midfield options in January.
It is understood United are considering a “surprise move” for Jobe Bellingham, who only joined Borussia Dortmund in July in a £25 million deal after a phenomenal season with Sunderland in the Championship.
However, the Englishman has only started twice in the Bundesliga so far.
Further, there is reportedly “increasing tension off the pitch between Bellingham’s father, Mark Bellingham and Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl” over the youngster’s playing time at Signal Iduna Park.
It is believed United are “closely monitoring” Bellingham’s situation in Germany, with the possibility of exploring a loan move in January.
The report adds: “It remains uncertain whether Bellingham would consider a move elsewhere, or persevere at Dortmund in the hope that things improve.”
United, meanwhile, are also contemplating a loan move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.
