It was a fully deserved victory by the end and whilst Benfica made a game of it first half, by the final whistle it could and should have been more than a three goal defeat for Jose Mourinho and his team.

Whilst Newcastle United got that win they deserved on Tuesday night, Joe Cole believes that hasn’t always been the case this season, when it comes to United getting what they deserve.

The former Liverpool, Chelsea and England winger stating; “I think Newcastle’s results haven’t matched their performances this year.”

I wouldn’t disagree.

The Newcastle United record in all competitions this season is played 12, won five and lost four, with three draws.

Fair to say that as well as their finishing letting them down at times, United haven’t carried much luck or seen the fine margins go in their favour very often.

Even Jamie Redknapp confessed that Newcastle United totally outclassed and outplayed Liverpool even though playing the majority of the match a man down. Redknapp saying he had never seen a team that deserved to lose as much as Liverpool did and yet won, nor a team that deserved so much to win as Newcastle did, yet somehow lose.

There is a feeling now that things are coming together and apart from that poor first half at Brighton, Newcastle have played better and better, looking to make it four wins in five games in all competitions, if beating Fulham.
