Joe Gelhardt’s scoring form drew strong praise from Michael Dawson and Neil Warnock after the Hull City striker hit his 10th of the season. Their plaudits arrive as January approaches and his Leeds United future remains a talking point.
The Leeds United loanee converted a second-half penalty he won himself on Friday with City trailing Middlesbrough 4-0. Speaking on Sky Sports, Dawson and Warnock highlighted his impact and growing importance at the MKM Stadium.
Gelhardt later limped off with a calf problem and is set to be out for some time, so he is unlikely to face Wrexham this week. He has eight goals in his past 10 outings.
Dawson called him arguably one of the signings of the season and said the forward has been a bright spark, repaying the manager’s faith. He recalled first facing a very young Gelhardt with Wigan and suggested the 25-year-old appears to have found a home at Hull City.
Warnock likened Gelhardt’s harrying to Dean Saunders, describing him as a manager’s player who never gives opponents time. He believes the Championship is his level for now, not in a negative sense, and feels he could progress, praising his finishing and attitude.
Both figures would like to see him remain beyond the January window, with Dawson noting rival interest could emerge. He questioned whether a Premier League side might need him and suggested he will not play at Leeds, while adding the striker seems happy in East Yorkshire.
