Whatever follows in Crystal Palace’s first European adventure, the night will likely be remembered for a 16-year-old’s debut. Joel Drakes-Thomas started at No 10 against KuPS and impressed in a 2-2 draw as the club’s fourth-youngest player.

According to NY Times, Oliver Glasner rested seniors and, with a hectic schedule and injuries, started three teenagers, with Drakes-Thomas grasping his chance. He threatened throughout and his late cross was almost turned in by Justin Devenny, a winner that would have taken Palace straight into the UEFA Conference League last 16.

At full-time senior team-mates sought him out with hugs and high fives. Glasner praised his confidence, personality and willingness to take responsibility, while stressing debuts are not gifted. The youngster’s work without the ball also appealed to his head coach.

Eight days earlier he travelled to Dublin for the 3-0 win over Shelbourne without leaving the bench. A fortnight ago came his Selhurst Park outing, a 3-0 FA Youth Cup victory over Bradford City. His delivery stood out and he combined with 17-year-old wing-back Dean Benamar.

The most talented prospect in Palace’s academy, Drakes-Thomas can operate across the three behind the striker or at wing-back. He featured in last season’s Premier League 2 play-offs at 15 and has played five Under-21 games this term. He has agreed to sign a professional contract when he turns 17 in June, and he has represented England while remaining eligible for Jamaica. Even so, Glasner urged caution about drawing conclusions from one game.
